The Manchester Ball 2012 will be our Silver Jubilee, and we aim to celebrate our 25th year of fundraising with our biggest effort to date to raise money for worthy causes, through your continued kind support.

The total amount raised at the 2011 Manchester Ball was £18,974, which was to fund a hugely worthwhile project for the Manchester Settlement to give young people the opportunity to improve their education and life chances. We were very touched by the many kind comments we received after last year’s event as well as the generosity of donations in the lead up to the Ball and on the night itself.

In 2012, the Manchester Ball will again be held in aid of The Manchester Settlement. The Manchester Settlement is a charity set up in 1895 to address the effects of poverty in the neighbourhoods of East Manchester. Today the charity still works with young people and children from one of the most deprived communities in England. Most of the young people and children they help are from disadvantaged and chaotic backgrounds with low self-esteem and without aspirations and their aim is to fully engage these young people who are in need of help and support to turn their lives around. For more information visit The Manchester Settlement

The Manchester Settlement Education Project works with vulnerable, challenging young people with complex problems and needs. Many of the children live chaotic lives and cannot cope at mainstream school. Funds raised from The Manchester Ball have enabled expansion of the education provision and to engage more vulnerable young people aged 13-16 back into learning. Through intensive targeted one to one support they have helped young people in crisis to improve their self-confidence and chances of achieving.

New this year is a youth club and programme of youth activities and outreach sessions supported by The Manchester Ball, to engage young people into positive activities in the evening. All funds raised at The Manchester Ball goes directly to supporting soem of teh most vulnerable people in Manchester.

The Manchester Ball will be held at The Hilton Hotel on Deansgate on Friday 16th November 2012. A booking form detailing sponsorship packages is available on request, please send an email to Enquiries@charityservice.org.uk

After the sensational feedback from last year, I am pleased to announce that this year, we have the fabulous Pure performing on the night. Pure is a premium collection of some of the UK’s top session singers and musicians in one band, whose singers perform regularly with Jools Holland, Basement Jaxx, Incognito and Pixy Lott. Their repertoire varies from good old Frank Sinatra all the way to Lady Gaga. For more information visit Pure

The Dick Camplin Education Trust (DCET) is a non-profit organisation, which provides £1000 Scholarships for financially disadvantaged students, who have gained places at University having attended Salford City College or Loreto College.

In 2007, Nigel Hirst and David Camplin met to discuss the possibility of helping a few exceptional 18 year olds; exceptional because they had overcome many of the inherent difficulties of living in some of the country’s most deprived areas, and had been accepted to study at University. The express aim of the Trust is to provide these students with Scholarships of £1000 to supply the necessities that others might take for granted: a laptop computer, course books, bedding, kitchen utensils and help with travel expenses. The Trust also offers help-on-demand when students inevitably encounter problems – with application forms, proof reading essays, and finding work experience. This service is even extended to early morning calls, or just to meet up and have a chat over a cup of coffee.

In order to maintain personal levels of close contact with our scholars, the DCET consciously restricts its support to two colleges: Salford City College, and Loreto College; both of which serve some of the most socially deprived areas of the country. The Trust’s Scholarships complement the work of Loreto and Salford City College by providing these students with the opportunity to fully realise their aspirational dreams through a University education.

Salford City College is a general further education college situated in Pendleton. It is dedicated to the mission of inspiring and empowering students to create and take opportunities to enrich their lives. It holds Beacon Status, the highest accolade that a college can receive.

Loreto College is a sixth form college situated in Hulme, Manchester. Loreto’s excellence has been recognised through numerous accolades including the Queen’s Award, two consecutive Ofsted reports which declared that Loreto was outstanding in all areas, and numerous Beacon Awards. The college consistently demonstrates excellence and improvement – reflected in improved performance within the league tables – and has one of the highest value added scores in the country, illustrating that students continuously exceed expectations.

Five years after that initial meeting between David and Nigel, we can look at the accomplishments of the DCET’s earliest scholars, now graduates, as they progress towards success in fields as diverse as Architecture, Accountancy, Law, Politics, Fashion, Engineering, Fine Art, Mathematics, Physics, and Higher Degrees. So far, the Trust has supported over eighty students from Loreto College and Salford City College, and has distributed well in excess of £80,000. This year we intend to support up to twenty-five students and provide them with Scholarships and the associated personal contact. Currently the need for the DCET’s assistance is substantially greater than when we started; the costs of attending University have never been so high!

The Trust has made it possible for many extraordinary minds to enhance their experience of Higher Education, and future donations will enable us to sustain our unique level of support. Your individual backing determines how much we can give and we are appealing to you so we can secure and protect the future education of some exceptional people.

We need your help to:

1) Procure sponsorship of students to the value of £1000

2) Provide paid internships for second-year students and new graduates in a professional environment.

Without the means to pursue academic aspirations, it is increasingly difficult to achieve successful and economically beneficial careers. Continued support for these most vulnerable students is essential to grant them the chance to reach their full potential and ensure the success of the next generation.

If you can help, or would like further information then please contact:

David Camplin at dcet@camplin.demon.co.uk or telephone 07976 900993
